PUBGEM Science & Society Café with Sickle Cell Disease Patients and Caregivers

As part of 2022 World Sickle Cell Day celebrations, we held a science café at the University of Cape Town with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) patients and their caregivers.

This event aimed to include the public in discussions on data science in medicine. The group expressed enthusiasm for using their data to find a cure for SCD but also voiced concerns about potential discrimination. They questioned why data collection efforts for SCD in rural communities are not as robust as in cities.
