What is PUBGEM-Africa?

PUBGEM-Africa stands for

Public Understanding for Genomics and Big Data in Medicine in Africa.

However, it’s more than just an acronym. It represents a commitment to promoting public awareness and dialogue about the ethical and societal implications of genetics and data science in health research.

As breakthroughs in genetics and data science promise to revolutionize medicine, it’s crucial to consider their ethical and socio-cultural dimensions. This involves celebrating the potential of these fields to enhance disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention, while also addressing concerns about data privacy, informed consent, potential stigmatization and discrimination, access to genetic testing, and fair distribution of the benefits of genetic medicine.

One of the primary goals of PUBGEM-Africa is to foster public discussions about these ethical and socio-cultural issues. We believe that everyone – patients, clinicians, researchers, ethicists, journalists, commercial companies and the public – can contribute meaningfully to these discussions. For instance, high school students worry about genetic enhancement, the deaf community is concerned about discrimination based on health data, and those affected by sickle cell disease are hopeful about gene therapy.

In the spirit of Harambee, join us in fostering public understanding and engagement on the ethics of genetics and data science in medicine and health research in Africa.
