Medical imaging offers substantial value beyond mere visual diagnostics, serving as crucial data for research, biomarker development, and AI algorithm testing. Advances in high throughput computing have spurred interest in transforming digital medical images into quantifiable data for research and machine learning.
However, creating comprehensive, well-characterized medical imaging datasets requires global collaboration involving researchers, companies, and non-academic stakeholders. This collaboration must address equitable participation, particularly for stakeholders in low- and middle-income countries, and navigate issues of access, ethics, and data sharing. Additionally, achieving equity in medical imaging requires addressing gaps in access, data literacy, and digital technology across diverse regions, particularly in Africa.
