Dr Esther Uwibambe
PhD Student, Rwanda
Dr Uwibambe is a medical doctor working in Rwanda. She was awarded an MBBS degree on completion of her medical school in 2019 from the University of Rwanda. Esther has worked on different health projects including writing the Rwanda protocol, “Identification and Evaluation of Autosomal Recessive Non-syndromic Hearing Impairment Genes in Rwanda” as part of the HI-GENES Africa project for which she coordinates the activities in Rwanda. She is an aspiring human geneticist and a prospective master’s student in Human Genetics at the University of Cape Town.
Her PhD research focuses on the identification and functional evaluation of autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing impairment genes in the Rwandan population. This work combines clinical data with genomic techniques to uncover genetic variants contributing to HI, and with the broader goal of contributing to improved genetic diagnosis and counseling for the affected families in Rwanda.
Besides her professional work, Esther enjoys poetry writing and performing arts and likes engaging with charity works.
