African Genomics Short Course

From origins to discovery and innovation: Strengthening genomics expertise and leadership in Africa.

In December 2025, the African Genomics Short Course was hosted at the University of Cape Town (UCT), bringing together researchers, clinicians, and scientists from across the African continent for an intensive training programme focused on genomics. Training initiatives such as the African Genomics Short Course play an important role in strengthening genomics expertise on the continent. Increasing capacity in genomics research and training is essential to ensure that African populations are represented in genomic studies and that advances in genomics can be translated into improved healthcare across Africa.

The 10-day course provided participants with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of genomic technologies and applications in health and research. Through a combination of expert lectures, practical training sessions, and interactive discussions, participants explored topics including genomic data analysis, African genomic diversity, and the ethical considerations surrounding genomics research.

The course was organised by the UCT Division of Human Genetics in collaboration with international and regional partners, including Wellcome Connecting Science, the African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG), Johns Hopkins University and The Jackson Laboratory. By bringing together participants from 30 countries and institutions, the programme created valuable opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange among professionals working in genomics across Africa.

GeneMap aims to highlight and share opportunities that support the growth of genomics knowledge and collaboration across the African continent and globally.
